EMERGENCY RESPONSE
March 11 Japan earthquake & tsunami response update
Mercy Corps' Japan response team and our partner Peace Winds started a significant economic recovery program for tsunami-affected families in the coastal northern city of Ofunato on May 17. The program distributes vouchers of $124 USD to families moving from evacuation centers to temporary housing, so they can buy food, clothing and other household basics. We plan to distribute vouchers to 2,000 households.
We continue to also support the emotional recovery of Japanese children through our Comfort for Kids program. On June 11-12, we will train local doctors, teachers, counselors, volunteers and social workers in Comfort for Kids, so they have the knowledge and tools to help kids cope with trauma, anxiety, grief and other effects of disaster. In August, Mercy Corps will also bring the Moving Forward program to Japan. Moving Forward uses sports and play to help kids build skills around self-esteem, resiliency, teamwork, and communication.
